Silverton Colorado Motorcycle Ride

Motorcycle Ride Silverton

In August, my BMW 800 GS Adventure and I got to know each other quite well. After 4 days of off-road riding through some rather grueling terrain in Silverton and Telluride Colorado, my body and my bike were banged up pretty good. But oh man, was it fun! About 40 of us met up in the southwestern rocky mountains as part of the Rocky Mountain Adventure Riders (RMAR). We set up camp in Silverton, from which we staged our rides. Since the group consisted of beginners who had never ridden…

Motorcycle Smartphone Mount – RAM Mount X-Grip

smartphone mount RAM Mount X-Grip

I needed a smartphone mount for my motorcycle for a couple reasons. Carrying a cell phone in my pocket while riding was quite inconvenient. Especially since I use it as an MP3 player so I can listen to music. Changing playlists and adjusting the volume without first pulling over was pretty much impossible, or if I did try, it was not safe to say the least. And since I also use my smartphone as a GPS device (like most other people), I needed to mount it somewhere so I could…

Colorado Back-Country Motorcycle Ride

March is still a pretty cold month in Colorado backcountry, except as is typically the case, Mother Nature generously dishes out a few days where the temperatures are warm enough for a motorcycle ride. Fortunately for us, a couple of those days happened to fall on the weekend, so we decided to take a motorcycle route through the Rocky Mountains. The route we took was conservative, considering there was still a lot of snow in the mountains. Nonetheless, we did get a lot of off road riding in and didn’t…

Oil Change in BMW F800 GS Motorcycle

Performing an oil change in a BMW F800 GS motorcycle is super easy, so don’t bother paying someone else to do it for you. Especially the BMW dealership who will gladly charge you a couple hundred dollars at their convenience. It only takes about 30 minutes, a tad longer if you haven’t done it before. Secondly, don’t buy the BMW oil change kit which runs about $85, or the BMW oil. It’s all way overpriced. This is what I buy: 3 quarts of non-synthetic oil = $21 K&N Oil Filter…

2015 BMW 800GS Adventurer Review

I’m back in the saddle again! After a 5-year hiatus (mostly due to events out of my control), I purchased a new 2015 BMW 800 GS Adventurer to quench my desire to hit the open road and fire-trails of the great Rocky Mountains. My last motorcycle was a 2005 BMW 650 GS Dakar, and while I was pleased with the bike, I had to sell it to buy a pop-up tent trailer. This was the only way my wife would go camping with me and the kids! Just so you…

Battery Maintenance – BMW 650 GS and Dakar

Battery maintenance is important and fortunately it’s easy. The original battery that comes with the GS and Dakar is unsealed, meaning you periodically need to add water. How often varies but it’s best to check it every few thousand miles or so. If you do a lot of off road riding, it’s best to check it more frequently. If the water is low, damage to the battery can occur and it won’t hold it’s charge as long. If you find that the battery is consistently low on water, there could…

Changing The Oil in a BMW 650 GS Motorcycle

Update: See the BMW 800GS oil change page for an updates version of this posting. Changing the oil in the BMW 650 GS and the Dakar is very simple. The BMW shop in my neck of the woods wants $150 to do the job, which is why I took it upon my self to learn how to do this. While you don’t have to get the oil change kit from BMW, it’s probably best because they provide the copper ring for the sump plug, the o-ring for the oil filter,…
